Agile and Beyond

It is hard to believe that Agile practices are now over 20 years old!

Agile practices have become mainstream in software development over the past several years. Agile practices are now moving beyond development teams, expanding into other areas of the company, such as security and HR. Most importantly, organizations are starting to take a “Systems View” to start to gain the benefits of lean and agile techniques in order to provide best value to their business and customers.

Katharine will share current trends and common pitfalls that she sees as organizations evolve to scale lean and agile practices across the entire organization. Some of the practices will include OKRs, “Business Agility,” the shift from “Project to Product” (and what that may mean for agile and project management type roles), Agile for non-software projects, Value Stream Management, and more.

Roles include development roles (BA, QA, Dev), Project Management, Cost Account Management, a large variety of Agile Roles (SM, RTE, Agile Coach, Transformation Lead), and ultimately training and coaching those new to Lean Portfolio and Product Management.

For the past several years, Katharine has taught and coached 1000s of people across all levels of large and small organizations on how to pragmatically apply continuous improvement, reduce frustration and delays, and quickly improve business outcomes, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement.

All About Certified Business Data Analytics (CBDA) - the practice and IIBA certification

Data analytics are critically important for businesses to understand the past, interpret the current, and chart the future, based on data. Business data analytics is the BA's role in the discipline.

The Certification in Business Data Analytics (CBDA) is one of four “specialty” certifications offered by the IIBA. Data Analytics is a domain that has garnered a great deal of attention as more and more organizations are seeking to become “data driven.” More than Data Analysts or Data Scientists, BAs have a unique opportunity to leverage their analysis skills to be a driving force in this transition.

This session will focus on understanding how core business analysis skills, combined with the ability to be agile and an understanding of the domain of data science and analysis can provide an organization with a path toward using their data assets to secure competitive advantage

Tom Tomasovic

“I enjoy helping BAs to do their job better!”

Tom has been involved with software development for over 20 years, with experience as a developer, a manager of developers, a business analyst, a manager of business analysts, and an instructor of web development and business analysis.

In addition to certifications in Requirements Engineering, Scrum, Agile Business Analysis and Product Ownership, and Tableau, Tom holds five (of the seven) certifications offered by the IIBA.

Prior to focusing on training early-stage BAs and preparing people for IIBA certification exams, Tom introduced and developed a business analysis practice, hired several certified BAs, and mentored and supported a number of his staff in achieving their IIBA certifications.

Having moved to the Columbus area (Delaware) several months ago, Tom is currently aligned with the Columbus IIBA chapter and looking forward to being more involved in the "local scene."

Psychitecture

When you try to present or propose models and narratives to inform design conversations, do you see the eyes glaze over people as they look for the door?

When we need to present, influence and inform our stakeholders, a lack of engagement can be frustrating.

Welcome to PSYCHITECTURE!

The Thoughtless Design of Everyday Things

Why do so many software systems and physical products seem to have been designed by someone who has never used a product like that before? This presentation explores that mystery. You’ll see numerous examples of thoughtlessly designed products that violate nine fundamental principles of good design, along with several examples of particularly effective designs.

By studying such products we can identify lessons that can help designers, product development managers, and even consumers. I’ll share nearly 20 of those lessons with you in this presentation. You’ll also hear about multiple techniques that can help designers craft products with a focus on how consumers will use them, not just on their features.
