Meeting is open and free to IIBA® Members and Non-Members Topic: Challenges of Business Analysis in Government Speaker: Harold Thomas, CBAP from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Summary Government can be a strange place, even a bit wacky at times. While business analysis is the same regardless of the environment it is in; it is the environment that affects how the BA works. How is state government different from private enterprise, and what are its challenges? Harold Thomas will present an insider's view as a BA for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. In addition, he will review the concept of Enterprise Analysis from the Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABoK) and apply it to the challenges of business analysis in government. Speaker Bio Harold Thomas has been with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services for nineteen years, twelve of them as a BA. He was one of the first in the chapter to get his CBAP, and served as Chapter Secretary last year. He has worked primarily with smaller client-server and Web systems; but recently contributed to a Request for Proposal for a child care time and attendance system. Summary It has long been known that the greatest source of product defects comes from Requirements. Poor requirements are fraught with ambiguity, incompleteness, logical error, inconsistency, and poor documentation. Although use cases have gone a long way to structure requirement flows, they yet must be verified and validated. In this presentation, Al Cline will show how to define a good use case, and guarantee use case completeness using workflow analysis. He will demonstrate how to guarantee use case correctness using UML analysis, a technique pioneered by Ivar Jacobsen, the father of use cases and co-developer of UML, for exactly that purpose. Mr. Cline will discuss the proper granularity and rigor of use cases and how they relate to the newer agile practice of user stories. Speaker Bio Al Cline has been a software engineering consultant for the last 20 years. He is president of Carolla Development, a software engineering consulting firm. He is also Board member of the Central Ohio Agile Alliance (COHAA), and a member of the PMI senior instructor core. Formerly, he was on the faculty of OSU’s computer science department, and AVP of Nationwide’s Requirements Center of Excellence. As president of Carolla Development Inc, he has helped Fortune 500 clients develop their own PMO’s and software development roadmaps; companies such as AEP, Bank One, CompuServe, Nationwide, State of Ohio, and Sterling Commerce. He helped develop his clients’ in-house processes, worked with upper management on the harder problem of strategic deployment and cultural change for implementation. Summary What makes a great use case? In tonight's meeting, Daryl will lay out strategies to help you improve your use cases from good to excellent. Requirements are often deceptively simple, so while writing stories in the form of use cases might seem easy, there are many traps a business analyst can fall into without realizing it. Daryl will help you manage those issues and improve your use cases Speaker Bio Daryl Kulak is a consultant with Perficient, Inc. His background is with the Rational Unified Process (RUP), which he has used with clients since 1998. He's been a designer, developer, tester, technical architect, project manager and requirements analyst on various client projects during the past twenty-five years. In the past ten years, he has spent most of his time as a methodology mentor, helping teams with use cases and iterative/incremental project lifecycles. He's the co-author of the book "Use Cases: Requirements in Context" (Addison Wesley, 2003) which has sold 25,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into Chinese and Japanese. Daryl is originally from Alberta, Canada, but now lives in Westerville, Ohio.
